A Smile, A Second Chance
Nagajaki’s journey from uncertainty to hope

When Nagajaki was born in Machilipatnam, Andhra Pradesh, what should have been a moment of joy for his family turned to one of uncertainty. They did not know he would have a cleft lip and palate. No one in the family had ever seen anything like it before.
With no guidance on treatment options, the family struggled to care for him in the days that followed. He choked during feedings and had to rely on bottles and spoons to receive basic nourishment. And when things were hardest, when the rest of the family was waking up each morning praying for Nagajaki to survive even to the end of the day, his father walked away. He just couldn’t accept his son as he was. Nagajaki’s grandparents stepped in immediately, becoming his source of love, care, and support.
Desperate for help, they visited several hospitals before reaching Basavatarakam Indo American Cancer Hospital & Research Institute at Hyderabad. After so much struggle and uncertainty, the staff’s message didn’t seem possible: Because they are a Smile Train partner, Nagajaki could receive complete cleft treatment free of cost at their hospital.
Anxiety melted into relief as the team went on to walk them through the treatment journey and reassure them that they are not alone.
As Nagajaki’s treatment progressed, the family’s attitudes began to change. His father came back and accepted him wholeheartedly. Today, he lives happily with his parents and two siblings, surrounded by the love, support, and sense of belonging that every child deserves.
