Rayan: From a Bumpy Start to Football Stardom
A dream fueled by passion, resilience, and a smile
Meet 14-year-old Rayan Bin Ashraf, a dynamic footballer from Thrissur, Kerala. His story proves that no one should ever give up on their dreams just because of the way they were born.
He hails from humble roots. His parents, Shahidabi and Ashraf, live in Thoyakkavu village in Thrissur District on the outskirts of Kerala. Rayan is their second child. The couple was overjoyed when they received the news that another baby was on the way, until the complications of the birth cast a shadow over their happiness. Rayan’s cleft made him choke on Shahidabi’s milk. He cried with hunger day and night, and his family feared he might waste away. Then, just when they began to lose hope, a local pediatrician told them that he could receive free cleft treatment at Jubilee Mission Hospital, courtesy of Smile Train. That moment marked the turning point in Rayan’s life.
“When I was barely four or five years old, I started playing football with my brother at home, and that’s when it all began,” Rayan said. “Looking ahead, I have only two objectives in life – one is to complete my cleft treatment and lead a full life, and the other is to focus on my game.
“Growing up, I realized I am different from others, but that could not be an excuse to not play football! My identity of being born with a cleft will always paint an incomplete picture if I don’t chase my goal of becoming a footballer.”

Now an eighth-grade student, Rayan has already secured his place with the Kerala Football Club. His unique balancing skills have earned him appearances on TV and a growing fanbase. He has a burning desire to be the best version of himself and play for India in international football someday.
Persistence is Rayan’s only mantra
“The confidence I have today didn’t come easily,” Rayan admitted. “I am immensely grateful for the ongoing treatment support that I am receiving at Smile Train’s partner Jubilee Mission Hospital. Because they took care of my health, I could take care of my dreams.”
Stories like Rayan’s inspire us to be the wings, the boost, or the quiet fuel that children with clefts need to thrive.
